Porfirio Diaz Research Paper

Porfirio Diaz Research Paper

It is better to regret something that has been done rather than never been done. Porifirio Diaz was a great and experienced leader. He presided over thirty years containing many great advances in Mexico. So why after all the support and reelection during that time do historians today look back and have any question of his motive in the stability and growth of his nation.

Not only is Diaz remembered today but well liked in his time of dictatorship. Diaz was a well rounded leader. He had knowledge of many important aspects in leadership such as areas of priesthood or religion, law and of course military. He was born in Mexico in the state of Oaxaca and born of the combined ancestry of Spanish and Mixtec. Being that he was part Mixtec, he had more of a desire to rule Mexico positively because it was the homeland of his many ancestors. This concept plays a key role in any leader, when the soil that is fought for is their homeland. Diaz was disciplined and a hard worker. He moved from average military soldier to Captain then to Colonel and eventually to General. It is said that great Generals make good presidents which Diaz demonstrates.

As president of the nation Diaz strived to establish economic growth and the countries stability. He created many jobs during his era, churches, government buildings and monuments were constructed that created jobs for many people. In the beginning of the Diaz era, Mexico was bankrupt. Although by the year 1895, a surplus of $2 million was increased by 1910 to $62 million. At that very same time, the value of imports and exports increased to 500 million pesos. For the first time the country seemed economically stable.

Modernization really took place in the Diaz era. The construction of the extensive railroad network was accomplished and made a major improvement in transportation. Mining for copper and digging for petroleum was a big factor pertaining to the economic growth in Mexico. The land contained valuable exports that the nation could use as an advantage over other countries.

For the first time, the people were able to conform to the nation as their own instead of following the culture set up originally by the Spanish. Many customs and traditions come from this era which flourished the culture that we are so interested in today.

It is hard to be a leader of an undeveloped or fallen nation. Every move made can affect the outcome of growth or morale of the people. Porifirio Diaz did a wonderful job in trying to do what was best for Mexico. He did sell a large part of Mexico's land to the United States which many look at negatively. That move was not only wise at the time, but a good outcome now. Considering the economic problems that the country is dealing with now, that extra large amount of land could have caused more of a problem.

Diaz took his knowledge and power, and with that, tried to create a stable nation. It could not have been easy being a leader of a nation striving for independence.
