Aqua Term Paper

Aqua Term Paper

Aqua broke up in 2002. There were four members of the group: Claus, Soren, Rene, and Lene; Vocals-Lene Grawford Nystrom & Rene Dif; Instruments-Soren Rasted & Claus Norreen. (Lene is the only girl in the group) The name Aqua came from a poster in their practice room that had the word "Aquarium" on it. One of their most popular songs was "Barbie Girl". Soren was the one that thought of the song after he saw a museum exhibition on Barbie dolls. On his was home he started to sing a tune "I'm a Barbie Girl...in a Barbie World... Life is Plastic... It's Fantastic..." that was soon to become "Barbie girl" their number one hit.

Aqua was kind of launched on a cruise ship. Rene (when he was a DJ) was DJing records for the passengers when he met Lene who was a hostess for a TV game show on the boat. Rene heard Lene sing the and they fell in love. Rene and Lene are just friends now. Then soon Rene & Lene met Claus & Soren who were at the time working at a gas station while also writing music for films and kids TV shows. They all started a group called Joyspeed but that didn't do so good.

Then they were signed in 1996 they went into the studio and they created Aquarium. Aquarium was recorded at a house in the Danish countryside. While recording in the country the old townspeople would see them and they thought that a spaceship had landed. Lene who has had military training and knows how to handle guns and bazookas. They also used to dress really different and to many people looked really wired.

There first released was "Roses Are Red," in September 1996. The song stayed on the charts for two months, receiving a platinum record in the process. The next release was "My Oh My" in February 1997, which went gold in only six days, becoming the fastest-selling Danish single of all time and paving the way for their breakthrough international hit "Barbie Girl." But than Mattel filed a lawsuit against them for the sexual overtones inherent in "Barbie Girl". Mattel said that the "Barbie Girl" lyrics were sexual and unsavory! (The lawsuit was soon thrown out) The band's first full-length album, Aquarium, was released in September 1997. Aquarius followed in early 2000.

The band enjoyed further success in 1998 when "Doctor Jones" and "Turn Back Time" both debuted at number 1 in the UK charts. "My Oh My' ended their remarkable sequence when it stalled at number 6 in August. Their comeback single, in March 2000 "Cartoon Heroes", also failed to break into the UK Top 5. The attendant Aquarius attempted to broaden their musical base to limited effect. The following year the band announced they were splitting up. In July 2002, the US court of appeals in San Francisco threw out a trademark lawsuit brought by the toy company Mattel against the band and MCA Records. Aqua is gone but not forgotten.
